Call for Children Creativity Labs

The ACE Children Creativity Lab offers a unique opportunity for local children and researchers from around the world to come together and inspire one another in exploring and creating the future of entertainment technology and unleashing its potential to empower as well as entertain.

The ACE Children Creativity Lab is fueled by imagination and technology. Children offer a boundless amount of imagination and creativity and given half a chance will breath new life and find a new purpose to any object be it a discarded cardboard box or a cherished pen with the pen turning into a spaceship and the cardboard box transformed into a space port with the beat of an eyelid. Present day technology offers the availability of smart materials capable of changing their color, shape, stiffness and so forth and of cheap and simple to use electronics capable of controlling and driving these materials. The ACE Children Creativity Lab offers a space in which the two can meet. We are currently seeking catalysts capable of sparking novel and interesting interactions between children and technology.

In order to take part in the ACE Children Creativity Lab participants are expected to propose imaginative approaches to conducting creative lab sessions with children. Each proposal should seek to empower and support children in exploring materiality and functionality using any mixture of physical materials and digital technology.

Selected participants will be invited to run their proposed creative lab session with a group of local children and to present and discuss their work in one of the poster sessions during the conference.

Extended versions of the proposal papers which will include a description of the outcome of the workshops and the authors impressions of running the workshops will be included the adjunct proceedings of the conference to be published after the conference.

Submission Requirements

  1. A paper (4 page maximum) describing the underlying ideas and motivations of the work as well as the overall activity to be pursued during the lab session. The paper should provide sufficient detail to allow the reviewers to critically assess the potential contribution of the work.
  2. A document describing the following:
    • Minimum and maximum number of children required for the effective running of the lab session
    • Age range of the children
    • Duration of the lab session (up to 4 hours including setup and break times)
    • Detailed breakdown of the activities indicating specific steps and the time needed to complete each step
    • Materials Needed to conduct the lab session

Children Creativity Lab proposals will be subjected to a double blind peer review by a panel of special jury and domain experts, and evaluated on the basis of their originality, promise, quality of proposed approach and their contribution to the diversity of the conference program. Authors are expected to anonymise their papers by removing all author and institutional identity from the title and header of the paper as well as any information embedded within the submission file.  However all references must remain intact, i.e. submitted papers should not have blank references (e.g., "8. REMOVED FOR REVIEWING").  In cases where you build on (and cite) your own work we suggest you refer to yourself in the third person, for example “This study builds on prior work by <author names> [8].” Submissions will be included in the ACM digital library.
